I'm an information junkie & I'm desperate

This addiction may bankrupt me

Originally published on Medium on Apr. 19, 2025

Sweet, sweet information

I like to think that I’m not susceptible to FOMO. I don’t watch all the latest shows so I can discuss them with my friends. You won’t find me hanging around the virtual water cooler looking for juicy gossip. I rarely dine at hip new restaurants so I can give them my hot take. I just don’t feel the need to tap into the whole cultural zeitgeist.

Mostly.

My one weakness

But I do have one big weakness in this regard, and it’s a doozy. I crave fresh information and insights on a near constant basis. One day, I might want to read the New York Time’s take on how tariffs will impact food prices. The next, I’m yearning for expert advice on how to make emu oil soap.

I crave the high that comes from learning something new, particularly if it changes my world view. Nothing hops me up like creating a new synaptic connection. It’s a straight-up dopamine hit to my brain.

I admit it. I’m an information junkie.

How it might break me

Sometimes it feels like I’ll read the entire internet to find that one perfect article. But that’s not entirely true. I’m not surfing free trad wife blogs or influencer Facebook posts. I’m a high-class junkie who only wants her fix from upscale news outlets. I want artisan content.

That means I’m generally paying for at least 5 subscriptions at a time, and I’m eyeing at least 5 more. I’ve tried to stem the bleeding from my wallet by paying for just one news aggregation service like Apple News or Ground News, but their selections were paltry. I’ve tried limiting myself to free news outlets like NPR and BBC, but that was like going on a grapefruit and celery diet. I’ve tried checking out e-versions of magazines from my local library, but I could barely read them in the app.

I think you get the idea. Nothing is ever enough.

Put me out of my misery

The plain truth is, I’ll never be able to afford subscriptions to all the publications I find interesting. I suppose I could try to illegally download the individual articles, but that’s not my style. I believe that good writers deserve to get paid.

What every writer's desk should look like

What I desperately want is an iTunes-like app for news articles. I may not be willing to pay hundreds of dollars each for dozens of individual subscriptions, but I would happily drop a couple of bucks on a single article if it looked interesting. If I’m honest, I’d probably spend more this way, but I would be getting what I want — a constant influx of information from the news providers I find valuable at that exact moment.

So, this is me begging.

Somebody, please take this idea and run with it. Information junkies, insufferable know-it-alls, and so many others like myself are waiting to pour money into this type of business model one hit at a time.

Our wallets are waiting.
